Mendi war shield

War shield South of Mendi village c. 1940 cm. 138 x 46 wood natural pigments.
There were three shields type among the Mendi : the large rectangular shoulder shield (SHOMO), the bowmen' s oval wooden shoulder shield (WORRUMBI) and the wooden under-arm shield (ELAYABORR). This item is from the second type (WORRUMBI), carried only when clans opposed each other in open lines of battle. Of elongated ovoid form, the front with a central ridge running longitudinally top to bottom, decorated with traditional designs, pierced twice slightly above center for attachment of fiber cord.
