Dida kerchief fragment

Dancing kerchief fragment. Raffia and natural pigments. Dida people. Ivory Coast. First half 20th. century. Very good condition. Cm. 46 x 40 (16" x 18").Sewn onto a cotton ground and mounted on a wooden stretcher frame.
This cloth is woven from fiber gathered from the raffia palm and patterned by the tie-dye technique often known by its Japanese name of shibori (or palangi in Indonesian) dyed using hundreds of stitches to form a resist, and a series of dips and a release technique. The dyes are all natural- using plant and root dyes.Has an extremely textural form, which is rare. Reminiscent of a topographical map of mountains. SOLD
