Arkilla Jeengo fragment

Ceremonial blanket's "Arkilla jeengo " fragment. Wool cotton and natural dyes. Fulani people. Mali. Second quarter 20th. century. Very good condition. Cm. 91 x 95 (3' x 3'2"). Ex Galerie Berdj Achdjian - Paris. Sewn onto a white cotton ground and mounted on a wooden stretcher.
Arkilla jenngo wool cloths were characterised by complex patterns executed using the tapestry weave technique set on a dark blue wool and white cotton chequerboard layout. This cloth differs in two ways.Dating from early to mid C20th this cloth was collected in Ghana where Malian blankets have been traded for centuries and become an important element of chiefly regalia at royal courts.
