Hizam belt

Woman's belt "Hizam". Silk metallic threads resist dyed (ikat). Arab people. Tetouan area. Morocco. Late 19th. / early 20th. century. Very good condition. Cm. 18 x 257 (7" x 8'5").
A silk belt (Hizam) worn by Moroccan women on ceremonial or festive occasions. The design is composed of floral patterns combined with heraldic motifs derived from Hispano-Moresque architectural elements. The base colour, dictated by the ikat-dyed warp threads, graduates from orange to purple. Belts such as this were produced on the draw-loom in Fes and Tetouan area with Lampas structure. SOLD
